The Ohio University (OU) School of Music has been officially in existence since 1917, although some of the individual programs date back to the 1880s. As early as 1883, OU offered piano lessons as an extracurricular activity. In 1889, OU established a Department of Vocal Music within the College of Arts and Sciences.
